Storm boys fight back, fall short against BDS

POLK - A 21-5 deficit after the first eight minutes was too much for the High Plains boys to overcome Friday night on their home hardwoods.

The BDS Eagles, behind 30 points from everywhere by 6-1 senior guard Ryan Tegtmeier, held off the Storm in the late-going and won 65-51.

Coach Cameron Hudson's Storm battled all the way back to within 11 points, 59-48, after a bucket-and-1 from Ben Nunnenkamp with 3:55 left in the game. High Plains couldn't get inside that margin however.

The Storm got a three at 2:16 of the first period from Cole Klingsporn, but fast-starting BDS still led 16-5. Tegtmeier hit one of his five 3-pointers at the first-period buzzer.

Klingsporn got a layup on the break after going the length of the court with a steal, then hit a 2-pointer at 5:58 of the second and put a trey in on top of it, then another two, but the Eagles answered every blow and still enjoyed a 31-16 lead with 2:20 until halftime.

Alex Bender got a bucket, drew the foul and canned his free throw in the late going to bring it to 31-19, but with five ticks left Grant Norder of BDS drained a three and the half ended 36-19.

Then the Storm took a blow of a different kind when Logan Fleming hit the floor and stayed there just 20 seconds into the third period. The smooth, 6-foot junior was helped from the floor and did not return.

A two then a trey from Klingsporn, whose 26 points led the Storm and challenged Tegtmeier's game-high 30, got it to 11, 38-27, at 6:09 of the third, but an immediate three from Tegmeier in answer took the wind from the Storm's sails again.

High Plains' offensive production was 14 2-pointers, five threes and 8-14 free throws. Klingsporn had nine field goals, five from three, and was 3-4 at the line. For the Eagles it was 11 twos, 10 treys and 13-19 from the stripe.

The Eagles host Osceola next Friday. The Storm is at Heartland Lutheran tonight, then hosts Meridian next Friday.
