Seward girls win by 15 over York

YORK — It wasn’t what York fans had hoped for, but for the Seward faithful it was the result they have come to expect.

The Seward defense made the Dukes play 20-25 feet from the basket the entire first half. They dominated the offensive glass, and when the final result was in, the No. 2 team in Class B had rolled up an impressive 42-27 win in Central Conference girls action.

York was struggling to get any kind of penetration towards the basket as the Seward “D” held the York girls to just five first-half points, while jumping to a 22-5 halftime lead.

The Seward girls were not shy about shooting the 3-point shot as they put up 15 in the first half alone and hit four. When the 3- point shots were not falling the Lady Jays were beating the Dukes to the offensive glass as they had 11 offensive rebounds in the first half alone.

York was having a dismal performance from the field as the Dukes were 2-18 over the first 16 minutes and 0-4 from 3-point range. Those numbers got much better in the second half, but the game was never in doubt after the first half of action.

York played much better in the third and fourth quarters, scoring 12 points in the third to the Lady Jays’ 17, plus their defense started to create some offensive opportunities as they forced the Seward girls into eight second-half turnovers.

Seward led 39-17 at the third quarter break, but only scored three points in the final quarter with a lot of reserves in action.

Seward ended the game 17-45 from the floor and fired up 23 3-point shots, hitting six of those. From the free throw line the Lady Jays were 2-5.

Leading the way in scoring for the Seward girls was Hannah Tvrdy with 18; she also connected on two treys in the win. Adding 10 points was 6-2 senior Courney Zadina and with five was Sierra Roth.

York fired up 39 shots from the field and made good on 10 of those. The Dukes were 0-8 from behind the 3-point arc. York hit 7-12 at the charity stripe. Leading the way in scoring was Hannah Riley with eight, Erin Malleck chipped in with seven, while Veronica Botts and Emma Grenfell had three each.
