YORK - The York boys shared the hero spotlight Friday night and handed visiting Beatrice its eighth loss against 11 wins this season, 58-48.
The home team profited by a big second quarter from Jonah Otte, a momentum-grabbing three at the third-period buzzer by guard Leighton Thomas, plus back-to-back killer threes in the third to go with clutch free throws and key rebounds down the stretch from Ty Danielson.
Danielson led all scorers with 22 points and Otte added 15.
York opened scoring on a two from Jared Miller, but Beatrice knocked down a three in immediate answer. The first two of Danielson's 22 points tied it at 5-all, then a three by Ryan Dolan off an assist from Danielson had it at 8-6 with 3:50 to go in the first.
Danielson hit a two and followed with a three for five unanswered to put York up 15-6 at 2:06.
Not to be outdone, Otte hit three buckets in succession that took York from 17-8 ahead to 21-8 in front and provided a white-hot spark for York.
The Orangemen answered back with successive threes, but a bucket from Danielson, then a basket-and-1 from Otte with :05.2 until halftime made the score 26-18 at the second horn.
Halfway through the third a matched pair of Danielson threes put the Dukes in front by 11, 35-24. A few minutes later a bunny by Miller with an assist from Danielson, followed by a Thomas stickback of his own offensive rebound, then a Thomas 3-pointer with :01.5 left put York's lead back to 10 at 43-33.
The Dukes would need every bit of that cushion in the fourth when the Orangemen drew within two, 43-41, then again at 47-45 and a third time at 49-47 with two minutes to go.
Enter Otte who canned a bucket when York needed one badly at 1:40, then watched as teammate Evan Neville got a huge steal to rob Beatrice of its next possession.
From there it was 7-8 free throw throw shooting by Grant Suddarth, Danielson, Neville and Dolan that got the Duke lead back to 10 at the end.
Ryley Zimmerman scored 20 for Team Orange, which got 12 and 10 from Matt Fujan and Ty Bardsley.
York scoring included six from Dolan, five from Thomas, four each from Miller and Suddarth, and two from Neville.
York hit 13 twos, five threes and 12-18 at the line. For the Orangemen it was eight 2-pointers, five threes and 17-20 free throws.
The Dukes will be 16-5 when they hit the road today to Holdrege. For Beatrice it's a mark of 11-8 as the Orangemen host Waverly this evening.
