After sharing the spotlight with wrestling during the weekend, the Iowa girls and boys basketball tournament trail resumes Monday night.
Five girls teams in The World-Herald’s western Iowa coverage area will attempt to reach the state tournament Monday in regional finals.
In Class 1-A, No. 3 Bedford (22-1) and unrated Villisca (20-4) will meet in the Region 7 final at Clarinda. Bedford, last year’s 1-A state runner-up, is seeking its fourth state trip, all in the last seven years. Villisca’s lone appearance came in 1968.
Also in 1-A, No. 4 Ar-We-Va (20-3) faces No. 12 Le Mars Gehlen (16-5) in the Region 8 final at Mapleton. Ar-We-Va is seeking its third straight state appearance and fourth overall. Gehlen made its state debut last year.
In Class 2-A, No. 3 IKM-Manning (22-1) will play unrated Treynor (21-3) in the Region 7 final at Denison. IKM-Manning could qualify for the fourth time in five years. Treynor is seeking its 14th appearance but first in five years.
Red Oak (13-11) is the first girls team to qualify for state. The Tigers beat ADM on Saturday in a 3-A regional final for their first state appearance in 90 years.
This is the first year for a five-class girls basketball system in Iowa.
