Second-half run boosts Wolves

DENISON, Iowa — Unranked Treynor scored seven straight points to take a third-quarter lead against No. 3 IKM-Manning in the Class 2-A Region 7 final Monday at Denison-Schleswig High School.

The Wolves (23-1) then responded with a decisive run to earn their third consecutive berth to the girls state basketball tournament.

After Callie Calfee’s jumper gave the Cardinals (21-4) a 34-33 advantage with 4:11 remaining in the third, the Wolves scored 24 of the next 28 points in their 63-49 victory.

“They’ve kind of done that all season,” IKM-Manning coach Gene Rasmussen said. “Teams would make a run, and (they’ve) really not given up or let down. I’m really proud of them in that aspect.”

The Wolves reclaimed the lead on a 3-pointer by Kali Rasmussen. And they never looked back. Less than seven minutes later, IKM-Manning had a 19-point cushion.

The Wolves will face No. 14 Maquoketa Valley (19-5) in the 2-A quarterfinals at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines at 10 a.m. on Feb. 26.

IKM-Manning led 42-36 Monday entering the fourth quarter. Morgan Muhlbauer opened the period by turning a steal into a three-point play that pushed the advantage to nine. The sophomore finished the game with 18 points and nine rebounds.

“I was really confident because I knew we were going to make it,” she said. “We pulled together as a team, and we worked together really well.”

Back-to-back 3s by Kenzie Cast and Rasmussen with a little more than four minutes left pushed the IKM-Manning lead to 17. Two free throws by Sarah Schlichte bumped it to 19.

Prior to the consecutive 3s in the fourth, the Wolves had hit only 2 of 14 in the game. They did, however, make 17 of their 20 foul shots, including all seven in the final period.

Paige Volkens and Tracy Purdy each had 10 points for the Cardinals in the fast-paced game that featured 51 turnovers.

Kaylee Blake led all scorers with 20 points. She also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds.
