Cyclones ride big run into district final

HARLAN, Iowa — Trailing 14-12 in the first quarter of its Class 3-A district semifinal Monday with Glenwood, Harlan found its touch from beyond the arc to extend its season.

The Cyclones (16-6) hit consecutive 3-pointers and scored the last eight points of the first quarter as they went on a 29-12 run to end the half and run away with a 79-53 victory over the Rams.

“We are advancing in the tournament and we would not want it any other way,” Harlan forward Nathan Cave said. “We were able to build a nice lead and make shots to keep it that way.”

Cave, who led five Cyclones in double figures with 18 points, hit three of Harlan’s six 3-pointers during the run. Gabe Ferry had 10 of his 14 points during the decisive stretch.

“We did a nice job of working inside-out tonight,” Harlan coach Mitch Osborn said. “We had great balance and each player kind of got hot for different stretches tonight.”

Trey Lansman posted his second double-double against the Rams in three weeks with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

The Cyclones ran their offense through Lansman and players like Kyle and Adam Juhl, who had 16 and 11 points, respectively, benefited with open looks on jump shots as the team knocked down nine treys in all during the game.

The two teams split their regular season meetings, with Glenwood winning by four at home and Harlan winning by eight on its floor. The game started back-and-forth just like the first two affairs with the lead changing hands five times in the first five minutes of the game.

Northern State football recruit JJ Hahn scored 10 of his 16 points in the first three minutes to stake Glenwood to that early lead but the Cyclones adjusted their defensive scheme slightly to slow the Ram big man down.

“We started digging down in the post a little more to help out,” Osborn said. “We were gambling a little bit because they have great 3-point shooters but we had to make him kick it out some.”

Harlan advances to play Carroll in Denison Thursday, weather permitting. The Tigers defeated Greene County 59-52 in overtime Monday and were coming into that game off a 70-51 loss to the Cyclones on February 14.

With significant snow in the forecast for the night of the district final, Osborn said he just happy to be advancing to the next round.

“We just played them a week ago and what a great scouting report for both teams,” Osborn said. “As long as we are still playing, we don’t care if it’s at three in the morning, three in the afternoon or seven at night.”
