MITCHELL — The Leyton and Sioux County boys basketball teams will play for the championship of the Class D-2, Sub-district 12 Tournament after registering wins in the semifinals on Tuesday night at Mitchell High School.
Top seeded Leyton rolled to a 65-34 win over Banner County, while second seeded Sioux County picked up a 46-41 win over Hay Springs.
The teams will face off in the title game on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Mitchell.
Leyton, rated No. 7 this week in the D-2 state ratings by the Omaha World-Herald, improved to 19-1 with its win Tuesday. The Warriors raced out to a 30-4 advantage after the opening quarter and never looked back. Leyton led 39-14 at halftime.
Four Warriors scored in double figures in the contest. Dylan Brenner led the way with 13 points, Brennen Cruise and Cody McKay both tallied 12, and Sam Schumacher added 11.
Banner County, who moved into the semifinal round after blowing past South Platte 61-31 on Monday in the first round, was led in scoring by Tyson Dahlgrin and Ben Hostetler with 11 points each. Mike McKown finished with eight points.
Leyton shot 6 of 9 at the free-throw line, while Banner County was 4 of 5.
Banner County ended its season with a record of 3-17.
The win marked Leyton's 11th in a row. Leyton's lone loss this season came against Bridgeport back on Jan. 8.
In Tuesday's other semifinal, seconded seeded Sioux County built a 36-23 after three quarters of play before holding off the Hawks in the final eight minutes to reach the final.
Sioux County's Kyle Westover led all scorers in the game with 24 points. Garret Gray added 16 points for the Warriors, who improved to 13-7 with the victory.
Regg Strotheide led Hay Springs in scoring with 23 points.
The Hawks shot 9 of 13 at the free-throw line, while Sioux County was 4 of 11.
Hay Springs ended its season with a record of 4-17.
Thursday's title game between Leyton and Sioux County will mark the first meeting of the season between the teams.
