Seacats' Miller places 10th at state

LINCOLN — Scottsbluff/Gering junior Noah Miller ended his season Thursday with a superb showing in the Nebraska state diving championships at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Miller, who was competing in his second state meet, earned a 10th-place finish with a score of 305.55 points. The top 16 placers earn team points.

Scottsbluff/Gering diving coach Debbie Post lauded Miller’s effort.

“It was great,” she said. “My goal for him was to be in the top 12, so getting 10th was great for our program.”

Post said Miller’s experience from competing at last year’s state meet helped him Thursday.

“I think this year he was a little calmer,” she said. “He knew what to expect. He truly was right in there with the best of them. He was in sixth place at one point.”

Miller ended only five points behind the ninth-place finisher, senior Jeremy Knispel of Kearney. Joey Weber, a sophomore from Ralston/Omaha Gross, won the title with a score of 458.6. Placing second was Lincoln Northeast’s Austin Alexander with 452.75 points.

Miller, who last year became Scottsbluff/Gering’s first diver to qualify for state since 2006, will look to improve on his state placing next year as a senior. Post said she’s excited to see Miller continue to progress.

“My goal for him next year is to finish in the top six,” she said. “I think that’s a very doable goal for him.”

Miller’s performance gets the Seacats off to a solid start in the state meet, which continues today with preliminary swimming events and ends Saturday with final events. NETV will broadcast Saturday’s finals.

Post hopes Miller’s strong showing boosts Scottsbluff/Gering today.

“I think it’s a good confidence booster to get everybody going,” she said.
