Kimball tops Chadron in C1-12 final

ALLIANCE — The Kimball boys basketball team captured its third straight Class C-1, Sub-district 12 Tournament championship with a 54-32 win over Chadron on Thursday night in Alliance.

Mike Daum led the Longhorns with a double-double performance of 18 points and 15 rebounds. Daum connected on a pair of 3-pointers.

“I’m very proud of our kids,” Kimball coach Bruce Tjosvold said. “They did all of the little things to get a good team win.”

The win advances Kimball (19-1) into the Class C-1, District 6 final on Monday against Gothenburg. The time and site of the game will be announced today.

Kimball is seeking its second trip to the state tournament in the last three years.

In Thursday’s sub-district final, Kimball set the tone of the contest early defensively by holding Chadron to just three points in the first quarter. The Longhorns managed to build a 22-12 advantage at halftime.

Chadron managed to close within six in the third quarter, but a couple of key defensive stops and buckets on the offensive end helped Kimball push its lead back to double figures at the end of the frame. The Longhorns’ lead stayed in double figures the rest of the way.

“Our kids really played well,” Tjosvold said. “Defensively, they played well and they rebounded especially well.”

Two other Longhorns joined Daum in the double-figure scoring column. Jake Reader registered 15 points and Caleb Reuter added 11.

Kimball converted 14 of its 21 opportunities at the free-throw line.

Spencer Eliason, Bo Westlake, and Von Sayaloune all scored seven points each to lead Chadron in scoring.

The Cardinals, who finished their season with a record of 7-15, shot 4 of 7 at the foul line.
