KEARNEY — The High Plains Storm emerged winless from the first-ever Nebraska Duals Wrestling Championships, but not by much.
A combined 15 points were all that separated the High Plains matmen from Bayard (36-32), Neligh-Oakdale (39-31) and East Butler (42-39).
The inaugural all-duals state championship took place Saturday at the UNK Health and Sports Center in Kearney.
In its opening dual against Bayard the Storm faced female opponents at 113 and 120. Hunter Sharman of High Plains pinned Madahi Garcia in 3:18 and Brandon Burruss won by 1:57 fall over Sammi Niezwaag in the 120-pound match.
Lane Church, Cale Bolton, Trey Engel and Kyle Beck won matches at 132, 138, 145 and 285. Tyson Fate won by forfeit for High Plains at 106, however the Storm gave up 18 forfeit points with no wrestlers to send out at 152, 182 and 220.
Winners for the Storm against Neligh-Oakdale were Tyson Fate, Burruss, Church, Bolton, Engel, Tanner Fate and Beck.
East Butler gave up losses to Burruss and Tanner Fate on the mat and to Lane Church, Bolton, Engel, Cole Church and Beck by forfeit.
