GENEVA — In the first quarter the Exeter-Milligan defense held BDS senior Ryan Tegtmeier to just two points.
Maybe it was the 1 p.m. afternoon start or the T-Wolves’ defense. Either way it took Tegtmeier a little while to adjust, but once he did the Timberwolves felt the wrath of the senior as he led the Eagles to a 49-37 win in the final of the D1-2 subdistrict at Fillmore Central High School.
With the win the Eagles will take on Johnson-Brock on Tuesday night for a spot in the Class D-1 State Tournament which gets underway on Thursday, March 7 in Lincoln.
Exeter-Milligan led at the end of the first quarter 10-5, but in the second the Eagles went on a 17-4 run behind Tegtmeier who scored 10 of his game-high 26 points to help the Eagles open a 22-14 lead at the intermission.
BDS started out slowly as they hit just 2-11 in the first quarter and 5-15 in the second, but the T-Wolves were having their own shooting woes at 6-17 in the opening 16 minutes.
Exeter-Milligan struggled behind the 3-point arc where it finished 2-12 in the loss.
The teams both put up 12 points in the third quarter and with 4:32 to play in the game the T-Wolves got a short jumper from Kyle Jensen to cut the lead to 39-32. Jensen led the team with nine points while Derek Luzum and Nolan White each tossed in six.
The T-Wolves tried to keep chipping away at the BDS lead, but the closest they would get would be six points following a 3 ball from Garrett Pribyl with 3:54 left in regulation.
Over the final two minutes it was the Tegtmeier show as both Ryan and freshman Riley combined for 13 of the team’s 15 fourth-quarter points.
Along with his 26 points Ryan Tegtmeier also collected 14 rebounds.
In the second half the Eagles were more patient on offense and hit 9-15 shots in the third and fourth quarters to finish 16-41 from the field. That number included 5-15 from the 3-point circle and 12-17 at the charity stripe.
The Timberwolves were 16-44 overall and 3-7 at the charity stripe. Exeter-Milligan finished with 13 turnovers to just eight for BDS, which will take a 21-3 record to the district final.
Exeter-Milligan closes out the campaign with a very respectable record of 17-7 and will return every player on the roster for another run next season.
