LINCOLN — Hanah Barnard scored a career-high 31 points and tied a Class B state-tournament record with six 3-pointers to help No. 2-rated Beatrice hold off No. 10 South Sioux City 59-56 on Thursday morning in first-round state tournament play at Pershing Center.
Barnard hit the first five 3-pointers she attempted to help the Lady Orange (20-2) take a 39-23 lead at halftime. Barnard, who scored 21 first-half points, fell one trey short of the all-class state tournament record of seven.
“I just came in here, telling myself I was going to make every shot,” Barnard said. “My teammates did a good job of finding me. We worked as a team and our offense was just rolling.”
Barnard, who entered the state tournament averaging 13.8 points per game, scored 14 in the first quarter alone. The 5-foot-7 senior guard finished 9 of 16 from the floor, going 6 of 8 from beyond the arc, and was 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.
“She is an unbelievably explosive player,” Beatrice coach Ryan Luke said of Barnard. “When she gets going, that’s what she can do.”
Jill Faxon added eight points, seven rebounds and six assists for Beatrice, which advanced to Friday’s 7 p.m. semifinal against Norris. Kimberly Higgins scored 13 points for the Lady Orange.
Madison Voss, a 6-1 sophomore center, was 8 for 8 from the floor and led South Sioux City (16-9) with 16 points. Morgan Hansen had 12 points and Augusta Thramer and Parese Greeley scored 11 points apiece for the Cardinals, who finished 0-3 this season against Beatrice after previously losing to the Lady Orange 53-45 and 65-43.
South Sioux City had an opportunity to send the game into overtime, but Hansen’s contested 3-point attempt from the right wing with one second to play missed.
