CAIRO — On a night of big plays, Centura coach Greg Hansen saw his defense come up big, but never moreso than in the waning moments against Ravenna.
The Centurions shut down a furious fourth quarter effort by the Bluejays to preserve an 18-14 victory.
Centura (3-1) was led by senior Jake Hickok, who gave the Centurions the straightahead power running game they needed in the second half, but also anchored the defense and proved invaluable as a punter.
“He’s been my do-all guy for four years,” Hansen said. “He’s a great kid and I’d keep him around for 10 more if I could.”
After both teams scored on their opening possessions for a 6-6 tie at the end of the first quarter, lightning forced a delay of nearly 90 minutes and the teams returned to restart the game under much different field conditions. Both quarterbacks struggled with their passing, and the second period became a battle of field position. But at halftime, Centura simplified its offensive approach and relied heavily on Hickok and quarterback Michael Hansen to carry the team with their legs. Still, Centura got one big pass play, a 60-yard completion to Jose Guzman, early in the half to set up a one-yard Hansen scoring run.
Ravenna rallied and moved the ball to a first and five at the Centura 13, but Zach Harston forced a fumble which Hickock recovered. Centura delivered an 83-yard, 13 play drive that didn’t actually eat much clock but generated a two score lead. The Bluejays responded by taking advantage of a defensive breakdown and Blake Chramosta found a wide open Tom Sieczkowski for a 60-yard touchdown, and a rare conversion brought Ravenna within four. The Bluejays got into Centura terrritory twice in the final four minutes of the game, but were unable to get through the Centura defense.
