Islander swimmers sweep Columbus

The Grand Island Senior High swim teams wrapped up their final home dual meet in style.

The Islanders came out and swept Columbus by scores of 96-72 in the boys and 105.5-64.5 in the girls Thursday at the Grand Island YMCA.

GISH coach Brian Jensen said the Islanders, especially the seniors, wanted to go out and give a good showing in the final home meet of the season.

"It was senior night so the kids wanted to swim well and swim fast," Jensen said. "We’re at the point of the season where the kids need to swim fast. I thought the kids did a great job for us today."

Lucas Van Wie made most of his final home meet. The Islander senior joined Daniel Novinski to win four races for the boys. Van Wie captured the 50-yard freestyle (24.93 seconds) and the 100-yard freestyle (55.46). He and Novinski joined Daniel’s younger brother Matt and Nathan Boon in the 200 freestyle relay (1:45.33) and teamed with Mason Kawata and Eric Lewandowski in the 400 freestyle relay (4:06.35).

"He had a very good day, especially in his individual races," Jensen said.

Daniel Novinski also captured the 200 individual medley (1:06.70) and 100 backstroke (1:04.03), while Matt Novinski took the 200 freestyle (2:13.35) and 100 butterfly (1:06.70) and Lewandowski claimed the 400 freestyle (4:48.09).

Senior Carly Wahlmeier and sophomore Sarah Koubek paced the Islander girls with three wins each. Wahlmeier captured the 200 freestyle (2:26.78) and 100 butterfly (1:12.69) and Koubek claimed the 200 individual medley (2:46.52) and 100 breaststroke (1:23.50). The two teamed with Amy Wahlmeier and Cassie Watts to claim both the 200 medley relay (2:09.86).

Watts claimed the 100 backstroke (1:12.35), while freshman Sienna Kunze took the 400 freestyle (5:13.33). Kunze joined Alyssa Fisher, Tori Peers and Maddie Haubold on the winning 400 freestyle relay (4:47.44).

Jensen said he was impressed the relay teams and with how Carly Wahlmeier swam, as well as her twin sister Amy, who finished second to Columbus’ Laura Miksch in the 50 freestyle and third behind Miksch and Watts in the 100 freestyle.

"There was good competition in the relays that they were able to get pushed and that helps," Jensen said. "I thought Carly had a great day on the girls side. Amy swam well even though she was going up against a great swimmer in Laura."

Jensen said it felt good to see the Islanders win their final home meet, especially with the Elkhorn Invite coming up on Saturday. He said that’s a meet the Islanders look forward into competing in.

"The kids had some good competition and went pretty hard today," Jensen said. "I think they were pumped up and swam well for us. Plus the kids are pumped up for that meet Saturday and they always are. They always seem to swim well and have good times in that meet. Swimming the way we did today is a good confidence booster going into that meet."
