COUNCIL BLUFFS — As Class 2-A St. Albert prepares to become the smallest member of the Hawkeye Ten Conference, the Falcons have once again proven they can successfully compete with the big schools.

Tuesday’s 63-49 victory at Thomas Jefferson gave St. Albert, which got 23 second-half points from Connor Moran, a sweep of the three 4-A schools in Council Bluffs this season.

The Falcons (9-7) had beaten both Abraham Lincoln and Lewis Central in December.

St. Albert receives nothing, other than bragging rights, for its mythical city championship. But it has shown that enrollment size means little when teams meet in competition.

“It’s always nice to come out and win all of your games in the city,” Falcon coach Dale Scott said. “All of these kids that play high school basketball in Council Bluffs knows these games have a little extra in each one of them. It’s a nice accomplishment.”

St. Albert broke free from a 23-all deadlock at halftime with a 23-point third quarter. Sparked by 16 points in the period by Moran, the Falcons built an eight-point lead at 40-32.

The Yellow Jackets (1-16) closed to within three a short time later before St. Albert scored the first nine points in the fourth to put the game out of reach. Moran finished with 25 points.

“We were missing a lot of layups in the first half, and our defensive intensity wasn’t where it needed to be,” he said. “We picked it up in the second half, getting tips and steals and fast-break points. We started making our layups.”

Moran opened the night by missing his first three shots. He made his last eight.

Alex Rindone added 13 points while John McGinn had 10 points and nine rebounds for St. Albert, which shot 50 percent from the field in the second half after going 9 for 27 prior the intermission.

Thomas Jefferson got 18 points from Brian Collinson and 13 from Freddie Williams. But it couldn’t sustain its early success against the Falcons while dropping its 13th consecutive game, dating back to Dec. 4.

“The third quarter got away from us a little bit,” Jacket coach Curtis Weber said. “We had a hard time containing the basketball. We’re getting better, and that’s the key. We’ve just got to stay positive. It’s hard to do, but you’ve just got to keep with it.”
